Rezension

"This whimsical novel will have many a reader at it's title." - The Observer (London)

"Lovers of traditional literature and books themselves will find validation in the lessons Rintaro learns (and teaches), while the story's structure and fanciful nature may hold appeal for a young adult audience more familiar with the conventions of gaming ...Cats, books, young love, and adventure: catnip for a variety of readers!" - Kirkus Reviews

"Bibliophiles will dote on this charming import from Japan, smoothly translated by Louise Heal Kawai."

- Library Journal

"Natsukawa's empowering Bildungsroman [manages] to be both whimsical and wise." - Shelf Awareness

"Quirky and heartwarming in equal measure, The Cat Who Saved Books invites us to remember the joy of curling up with a favorite book, and savoring the tactile pleasure that comes with turning the pages and immersing ourselves in a good story." - The Japan Times

"Combine "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" with "Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" and you might get a feel for this delightful novel. A talking bookstore cat persuades a young man named Rintaro to embark on a quest to save books from barbarous fates, including languishing on shelves and being "tortured" by a man whose speed-reading tutorials involve scissors."

- Washington Post

"Charming." - Publishers Weekly

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

Grief is hard- but maybe it's more bearable with this magic tabby cat

Natsuki Books is a small second-hand bookshop and Rintarou's favourite place, being an introvert and not handling interacting with others well. After his grandfather, owner of this small store, passes away, Rintarou has to deal with the grief of losing someone close to him, with the bookshops impending fate weighing extra on his shoulders. He hides behind the bookshelves and countless rare books that his grandfather loved, when a talking tabby cat appears in his shop, needing specifically his help in a magical quest to save books from certain doom. This is the most tender, heartwarming story I have read in a while. I love the characters, especially Tiger the cat of course, but also Rintarou and Sayo, his classmate, were a joy to read about. The premise of the labyrinths, the tests that Tiger puts Rintarou in, are simple enough to understand, but each of them help Rintarou overcome his grief about his grandfather. If you want a short. adorable book dealing with serious themes in a great way, you'll love this!

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    hikikomori hero of books

It is a well-written, rather calm story. The main characters are very well portrayed and the cat's sarcastic personality makes you chuckle at times. Rintaro's personal development from the beginning to the end of the story is presented very well. A good story to read on holiday – it will make you love books even more!

    An enjoyable story

Particularly for those who appreciate the value of books and how they affect people in different ways. Interesting character development and setting in Japan. Maybe a different type of cat to the one expected. Recommend it .

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Wonderful

Join Rintaro on several short journeys, iniciated by a wonderous cat that can talk, to save books from imprisonment, destruction and too little appreciation. Follow Rintaros own personal journey after losing his grandfather and struggling to find his way in life. A heartwarming book for all kinds of book lovers that makes you think about your own attitude towards the handling of books.

    When Stories Become Companions

"The Cat Who Saved Books" is a gentle, magical tribute to the power of reading. With warmth, quiet wisdom, and a touch of whimsy, Sosuke Natsukawa tells a story about grief, courage, and the enduring companionship of books. Rintaro’s journey alongside the talking cat is both tender and thought-provoking, reminding us that stories are meant to be cherished, not rushed or exploited. A comforting, heartfelt novel that celebrates literature as a lifelong friend.
