Go as a River

A deeply touching book set in the America of the 1940s to 1970s that deals with heavy topics – racism, violence, war, motherhood, loss, grief, to name a few. I grieved with the characters, thought about injustice, about expectations, about judgment, about the complexity of humanity; and, mostly, cried. I read this in one sitting, only stopping to wipe the tears from my face every few minutes. It’s a beautifully written book, but a heavy read.

Shelley Reads "Go as a River" ist ein emotionaler, häufig trauriger Roman, welcher sich trotz dessen eine hoffnungsvolle, mutgebende Note beibehält. Wir begleiten die Protagonistin Victoria, welche, genau wie die anderen Charaktere, toll gestaltet ist. Sie ist stark, macht ganz viel Entwicklung durch und schöpft aus jedem Schicksalsschlag, welcher ihr entgegen geworfen wird, wieder neue Kraft. Dazu kommt noch Shelley Reads wunderbarer Schreibstil. Er ist atmosphärisch und stellt das grandiose Setting fantastisch dar. Ich finde es gut, dass die Autorin auch ein wenig Gesellschaftskritik in ihren Roman eingebracht hat. So gibt es Szenen über Rassismus und Sexismus. Zugegeben muss ich anmerken, dass die Handlung zwischenzeitlich ein wenig konstruiert und unlogisch wirkte. Manchmal zog sie sich ein wenig, wodurch manche Abschnitte etwas langweilig waren. Trotzdem kann ich diesen gelungenen Roman weiterempfehlen.
