Ensnared - 4-Star Monster Romance
This a story about the vrix. A very intelligent alien species that closely resemble spiders. They live in the Tangle, a dense, dangerous jungle made up of several vrix colonies. Under the rule of queen Zurvashi, however, the vrix aren’t thriving like they should. She’s ambitious, cold-hearted and cruel. A ruler who takes what she wants with very little regard for the well-being of her people.
Kethan has chosen a life away from the den in Takarahl. Living as a hunter, he only ever returns to deliver his monthly offerings in. Ever since his heroics during the war, the queen has set her sights on him, demanding that he submit and become her mate. It’s all the more reason for him to stay away even if it means being separated from his sister and childhood friends.
During one of his journeys to the Den of Spirits, the queen gives Kethan an ultimatum because she’s done waiting. On his way back home, Kethan goes hunting to clear his head, only to fall into a deep mysterious pit that none of his kind dares to go near. What Kethan finds at the bottom rattles his world. There’s an old, crashed spaceship. Against every instinct warning him to leave it alone, curiosity wins. Inside, he finds a strange creature preserved in a cryochamber. Acting on impulse, he releases the female looking creature and takes her back to his den.
When Ivy wakes, she finds herself captured by a giant spider-like being. She has no idea where she is, how she got there, or why she’s no longer on her way to the new human colony. All she knows is that she’s terrified, alone and completely at his mercy.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect from this story, but it definitely wasn’t this.
Yes, this is a romance between a human and a spider-like alien. I know that alone sounds wild and like a complete turn-off for many readers. I was skeptical too, but after seeing so much positive feedback, I decided to step outside my comfort zone and I’m so glad I did.
I didn’t think this kind of romance could work, but it absolutely does. The authors make it believable in a way that feels natural and surprisingly heartfelt, which really speaks to the care, creativity and thought put into the story. There’s a light, almost playful tone to the writing that pulled me in right away and the authors’ creativity really shines through in both the setting and the dialogue.
One of my favorite aspects was the communication barrier and how the characters slowly learn to understand each other. It’s done so well and adds a lot of charm and banter to their interactions.
The story itself is unusual but incredibly cute, lighthearted, romantic, with just a touch of spice towards the end, some banter, and an underlying plot involving political tension and a potential rebellion.
The pacing is a bit slow at the beginning but really picks up towards the middle and eventually the story becomes hard to put down. It ended up being such a bingeable read for me and a perfect palette cleanser at the same time.
Both main characters feel layered and well-developed and Ivy’s background story is quite heartbreaking. And Kethan? He’s absolutely adorable. Total golden retriever energy and I loved everything about him. The small gestures he makes (like crafting her a silk dress) had me swooning.
I think this is a bit of a hidden gem in the monster romance genre and I can only encourage you to give it a try.
If you’re already a fan of Ruby Dixon’s stories, there’s a very good chance you’ll enjoy this too.
I’ll definitely be continuing the series.
