Harry Lewis ist frei und sein ehemaliger Herr hat ihm versprochen, dass das vielversprechende Fohlen ihm gehört. Natürlich darf das niemand wissen, denn im Jahr 1855 darf kein Schwarzer ein Rennpferd besitzen. Von den Gewinnen, die ihm versprochen werden, will Harry seinen Sohn Jarret freikaufen. Doch es kommt anders. Viele Jahre später gelangt der Doktorand Theo an ein altes Gemälde, das ein Rennpferd mit seinem Pfleger zeigt. Gleichzeitig versucht Jess alles über das Skelett eines Pferdes herauszufinden, dass im Museum ausgestellt ist. Irgendetwas kommt ihr eigenartig vor. Der Zufall fühlt Jess und Theo zusammen und sie wollen mehr über das Pferd und seinen Pfleger zu erfahren.
Mit der Verknüpfung von mehreren Geschichten auf unterschiedlichen Zeitebenen bekommt der Leser oder die Leserin die Lebensgeschichte des Rennpferdes Darley/Lexington nahegebracht. Vor den amerikanischen Sezessionskrieg war der Pferderennsport eine anerkannte Sportart. Züchter, Trainer und Pfleger suchten nach den vielversprechendsten Fohlen. Dabei hat Lexington in seiner Karriere nur wenige Rennen gewonnen. Seine Linie hat allerdings viele erfolgreiche Rennpferde hervorgebracht. Jarret ist es, der Lexington liebevoll aufzieht. Sein Vater und er haben Pläne, die allerdings durchkreuzt werden, weil schwarze Menschen manche Möglichkeiten einfach nicht haben. Dennoch schafft es Jarret immer bei seinem Pferd zu bleiben.
Von dieser Lebensgeschichte eines Rennpferdes zu erfahren, ist sehr interessant und spannend. Was das Pferd angeht, hat sich die Autorin weitgehend an die historischen Fakten gehalten. Darum hat sie eine fiktionale Handlung gesponnen, die einen nach einigen anfänglichen Gewöhnungsbemühungen wirklich packt. Der Lebenslauf von Jarret ist in seine Zeit geschrieben. Es ist bedrückend zu lesen, wie mit den Menschen umgegangen wurde. Doch Jarret findet einen Weg. Und auch die weiteren Geschichten ziehen einen in ihren Bann, vor allem wenn man nach einer Weile merkt wie geschickt alles sich zusammenfügt. Leider hat der Roman so ein inzwischen muss man sagen typisch amerikanisches Ende. Da möchte man so langsam doch mal von einem anderen Ausgang lesen. Insgesamt aber ein sehr lesenswertes Buch über ein Pferd, das beinahe eine Art Nationalheld geworden ist.
