"I'm the Girl" is part murder...

Bewertungsnummer: 1808311

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

"I'm the Girl" is part murder mystery and part coming-of-age novel. If you enjoy hard-hitting and uncomfortable books that put you on an emotional roller coaster and will stay with you long after you finished reading them, this novel should be right up your alley.

„It’s better to know who you are than who you think you’re meant to be.“ When sixteen-year-old Georgia Avis finds the body of 13-year-old Ashley James, she barely escapes with her life herself. Together with Ashley’s older sister Nora, Georgia tries to find out what exactly happened. Not only do they put themselves in harm’s way, though, the things they uncover are even more horrible than they could have imagined… Since I positively devoured „Sadie“ and „The Project“, I couldn’t wait to dive into Courtney Summers‘ newest novel. This time around, I ended up with quite mixed feelings, though. „I’m the Girl“ is part murder mystery and part coming-of-age novel – but a pretty dark one at that. The overall storyline is intriguing but at the same time very hard to read and potentially triggering to some as it includes issues like trauma, drug abuse, sexual abuse, grooming and pedophilia. Each and every character in this book is rather flawed and has their cross to bear, most notably the novel’s protagonist. Georgia is a rather gullible and naive teenager who never really got any affection and longs for validation. They way she goes about getting praise and recognition is not great, though, and makes her vulnerable to people who just want to use her for their own gain. I am a bit torn about the love story in this book. While I appreciate that our main character is gay, I hate that her relationship is pretty toxic a lot of the time. I get the reasons for that, but I just would have wished for at least one healthy relationship in this story. The biggest issue I had with this book is that it felt a bit all over the place. Because of that I was left pretty confused more than once, which unfortunately somewhat dampened my reading experience. Also, again, I understand why the book ends the way it does, but it still left me quite unsatisfied. Even if at times misleading, I loved the plot twists, though. If you enjoy hard-hitting and uncomfortable books that put you on an emotional roller coaster and will stay with you long after you finished reading them, „I’m the Girl“ should be right up your alley.
