    Great finale

Some weeks ago i finished the first law trilogy. A lot of action is going on in this last one of the three books. Features an Unforgiving and beautifully designed storyline - it really sucked me in.

    amazing grim-dark fantasy

** 4.5 stars ** (rating for trilogy as a whole) // A series which highlights the good and the bad in people in a world where Swordsmen, rogue people, noble folk and Magi are suddenly mixed together and forced to fight towards a common goal - which seemingly no one truly knows, except maybe Bayaz, the first of the Magi. Granted, this is a long story. Which, in my opinion, is needed for the reader to get the scope of the land, the people in it and the stakes which are at play. To me, this is a story, I’ll read again, as I think I’ll see and understand even more things. Not that one go wouldn’t be enough to get the plot but this world and the things at play are just so big that I think I’ll have some more “ah, right-moments” the second time around. Joe’s writing style is not something I’ve read much in the past but I’ll definitely read more of it in the near future. It reads very raw, honest and authentic. I’d go as far as to say that he’s up there with the best when it comes to writing fight scenes/war. Not somehow whitewashed or romanticised but brutal and grim - as war is. Also, the interactions between the characters felt so true-to-live and it was such a joy to follow them individually and as a group. Some of them are PITAs, some of them are reasonable, some of them are cowards and most of them have so much more to them. Their development was just cool to read. All in all, this is a fantastic series and I can’t wait to get started with “Best Served Cold”. This very open end left me hanging and wanting for more. For everyone who loves morally grey characters and epic, grim-dark fantasy: this one’s for you.
