This was the perfect fantasy book: Great world-building, a strong female protagonist and and a magical world where dragons exist. I really loved Shiori's story and how she developed as a character throughout the book. It´s perfect for getting you out of a reading slump and will make you sit on the edge of your seat for the sequel!

Bonds of Blood and Threads of Magic

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

"Six Crimson Cranes" is a spellbinding fantasy that lingers long after the final page. With this novel, Elizabeth Lim crafts a story that is at once fairy-tale delicate and emotionally profound, weaving classic motifs into an Asian-inspired world shaped by grace, cruelty, and quiet resilience. Princess Shiori’s journey lies at the heart of the narrative. Cursed into silence and burdened by forbidden magic, she must navigate a world where even a single word could mean death for those she loves. Her transformation—from a sheltered, impulsive princess into a young woman defined by quiet strength, courage, and remarkable self-discipline—is rendered with striking sensitivity. Lim allows Shiori to grow gradually, believably, and with emotional nuance. The prose is lush yet restrained: lyrical without becoming overwrought, melancholic without ever feeling heavy. The bond between Shiori and her brothers carries a tender emotional weight, while the ache of enforced silence adds a poignant undercurrent to every scene. The slow-burn romance unfolds with softness and subtlety, enhancing rather than overshadowing the central themes. Beloved figures such as Kiki and the enigmatic dragon lend warmth and magic to an already richly layered tale. "Six Crimson Cranes" is an atmospheric and beautifully told beginning to a duology that reimagines familiar folklore with originality and heart. A moving, multifaceted fairy tale about loss, loyalty, and the strength to fight for what is right—even without a voice. For me, it is an undeniable highlight.
