The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea

This book was a true pleasure to read. It's beautiful in it's own way. Normally I'm not a fan of books with different perspectives, but this one was different. I loved the way the story was told and the way each fragment intertwined perfectly with eachother, to create something great, something new, to build this story. It surprised me. The characters showed that even in a world of cruel violence and injustice, there might be something else for them afterall. Additionally, I think this book just did a great job creating a safe space by including pronouns, different genders, different sexualities and most importantly respecting them without offensive questioning or hate (at least the main characters). All of that with occasional, casual mentioning - without putting all the focus on that, making it normal that different people exsist, which I absolutely loved. And I especially love Evelyn ;)

A very nice book! If you are looking for a queer story about finding freedom, magic and pirates, this is definitely the book for you. The world-building is only to adore and I had a really good time reading it !

This book absolutely surpassed my expectations. I picked it up thinking it'd be the light, casual, sapphic pirate adventure I was longing to read, but it ended up being so much more than I ever expected. The story is beautifully told in 3 different parts and from various perspectives and my favourite parts, the interludes. The character of the Sea was so refreshing to me and really changed my view of our oceans and how we may perceive them. In accordance to this, the way witchcraft is dealt with in this book was another really refreshing take and left me absolutely in awe of Maggie Tokuda-Hall's amazing way of thinking and imagining. Not only is this a beautiful sapphic love story, it's also a story about gender identity, found family and the curse or blessing of forgetting. Absolutely loved this book and can only recommend to any fantasy lover!

An genderfluid sapphic mc and an sapphic mc and their both poc? What else do you want! The world building and the story telling is unique. You get surpised by the characters and their storys. You can be sure that this book is something you don't want to miss

What more could you want but queer pirates? Most of the cast are poc's which is a lovely change to see!
