Who knows the movie "You’ve Got Mail" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks from the 90s? This plot reminds me extremly on that movie even if the cover is so damn cute. Hopefully it is a littel bit different like that!

All Is Fair in Love and War

"Last Chance Books" is a YA novel about a girl determined to save her family's bookstore - whatever it may take. One of the few constant things in Madeline's life has always been her family's bookstore. When she learns that it is going to shut its doors forever, just when she is about to leave for college, she is determined to do everything in her power to keep that from happening. Unfortunately, a new bookstore opening across the street doesn't exactly make things easier for Madeline and falling for the owner's son is probably not a good idea either... I love the movie "You've Got Mail", so when I read the synopsis of this book, I knew I had to get my hands on it as soon as possible. I do like the overall story of "Last Chance Books", but I also have my issues with it. Madeline is a flawed protagonist, which I appreciate, a determined and headstrong young woman who knows what she wants, but sadly has litte regard for others. I totally get her predicament, but she's taking things way too far with the sabotage. Also, I do understand where her trust issues and her egocentricity are coming from and am glad that it's something that does get talked about, but I still find her to be quite annoying at times because of those character traits. I like that this isn't "just" a story about a bookstore or "just" a love story, but that this novel also addresses topics like absent parents, fear of change and self-acceptance. A very important character to the story, in my opinion, is Astrid. I am in awe of what she's done for her family and would have loved to get her perspective on everything that's happening in this book. I recommend "Last Chance Books" to teenagers aged 15 and up. If you enjoy love stories and/or stories about big life changes, this might be a book for you.
