In kapitalistisch organisierten Gesellschaften ist die Teilhabe am Arbeitsmarkt ein entscheidender Faktor, um Zugang zu Gütern wie Wohlstand und sozialem Ansehen zu erhalten. Dabei erleben wir gegenwärtig eine rapide Veränderung traditioneller Modelle von Erwerbsarbeit sowie ein intensives Suchen danach, unter welchen Bedingungen sie überhaupt noch als ein sinnvolles, das Leben bereicherndes Tun erfahren werden kann. Es stellt sich grundsätzlich die Frage, wie weit man den Arbeitsbegriff fassen soll. Vor diesem Hintergrund steht "Arbeit am Selbst" für eine denkbar weite Fassung dieses Begriffs, indem sie ihn gleichzeitig auf einen speziellen Gegenstand bezieht, nämlich auf das, was wir unser Selbst nennen. Damit gerät ein anthropologischer Zusammenhang in den Blick, der bereits seit der Antike bekannt ist. Die vorliegenden Beiträge erkunden verschiedene Aspekte dieser wichtigen Thematik aus philosophischen und theologischen Perspektiven.

In capitalistically organized societies, participation in the labor market is a decisive factor in gaining access to goods such as prosperity and social standing. We are currently experiencing a rapid change in traditional models of labor as well as an intensive search for the conditions under which it can still be experienced as a meaningful, life-enriching activity. The fundamental question arises as to how broadly the term "work" should be defined. Against this background, the formula "Working on the Self" stands for a very broad version of this term, in that it also relates to a special object, namely what we call our self. This brings an anthropological context into focus that has been known since ancient times. The contributions of this volume explore various aspects of this important topic from philosophical and theological perspectives.
