Open this volume and eavesdrop on the backrooms of letters, where reputations are made, manuscripts vanish, and marginal notes outlive their owners. Books have secret histories too. Here, the footnotes become drama. Isaac Disraeli's Curiosities Of Literature: And The Literary Character Illustrated is a literary anecdotes collection that reads like a cabinet of wonders: classic literary essays on forgotten quarrels, eccentric scholarship, and the odd accidents that shape what we read - from the quirks of printers and patrons to the rise and fall of fashionable authors. In an illustrated literary anthology in the older sense, Disraeli illustrates literary character with vivid portraits, turning literary history curiosities into irresistible narratives. Expect authors and books trivia alongside reflections on taste, fame, plagiarism, and the afterlife of books. You will meet editors, translators, impostors, and fervent readers, all caught in the act of making literature - a lively reference for bibliophiles and a literature students companion. Dip in for a single curiosity, or follow the thread and watch a whole era of reading habits unfold quietly. Written in the atmosphere of nineteenth century england and steeped in regency period literature, these pieces helped shape the English tradition of literary miscellany, moving easily from samuel johnson criticism to the conversational sparkle later admired in charles lamb essays. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure, perfect for casual readers and classic-literature collectors who cherish book collecting lore.
