Fresh biographical insights and critical analysis illuminate John Donne's life and work
John Donne's forceful, innovative voice can seem deceptively contemporary, yet his poetry and prose demand to be read with an understanding of the early modern context that shaped them. The Life of the Author: John Donne presents a closely integrated examination of his life and literary achievement, offering fresh perspectives through searching readings that connect his writing to his world without reducing it to autobiography.
Drawing on neglected documents and overlooked evidence, this study reveals new details about Donne's biography, including the ramifications of his brother Henry's death and the surprisingly generous marriage settlement from his father-in-law. The Life of the Author pays particular attention to Donne's wife Anne and traces her presence in his poetry beyond her death, while exploring his lifelong preoccupation with mortality and the Resurrection of body and soul.
Written for readers at all levels of engagement with Donne's work, from undergraduates encountering him for the first time to scholars and lecturers seeking new perspectives, this book offers both biographical discovery and critical illumination for anyone drawn to one of English literature's most compelling voices.
