Before Pennsylvania had a name, a family was already making history. A family shaped a province. In The Penn Family, J. Jay Smith offers a historical family biography with the narrative pull of classic nonfiction history and the rigour of a genealogical history book. From 17th century England to the colonial Pennsylvania era, the story follows the William Penn lineage through faith, politics, property, and migration, illuminating the ideals that travelled with early Quaker settlers and the realities they met in a new world. Part Quaker family history, part Pennsylvania founding history, this is also a practical genealogy research reference: names, connections, and contexts set out to help readers place the Penns within wider colonial America biographies. For American history students, it clarifies how family networks, belief, and patronage influenced leadership and land during the formative decades of colonial America. Local historians and family researchers will appreciate the steady attention to sources and the sense of time and place, while casual readers can simply enjoy a clear account of how one prominent Quaker household intersected with law, commerce, and governance too. Read for the sweep of people and place, or consult for its careful mapping of kinship, The Penn Family holds lasting value as a window onto early Atlantic society and the roots of Pennsylvanian identity. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today -- a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
