Enter the council chamber of a fragile colony. Power, law, and loyalty collide. From 1667-8 to 1693, these Proceedings of the Council of Maryland open an unfiltered window onto the early Chesapeake Bay colony, preserving colonial Maryland council records at the very heart of decision-making. Recorded debates, proclamations and official orders reveal how British colonial administration in Maryland navigated land claims, defence, trade and relations with the Crown, creating a rich tapestry of colonial legal and political history. As part of the renowned Archives of Maryland collection, this volume gathers authentic primary source colonial records that shaped seventeenth century Maryland history and, through it, the wider story of colonial America. Scholars and students of early American colonial records will find in these pages a foundational research resource colonial America, while family historians gain a valuable reference for historians and genealogists tracing ancestors in the colony. Yet the vivid voices of governors, councillors and petitioners also speak to the curious general reader, bringing the risks and ambitions of frontier governance to life in a landmark colonial Maryland primary documents collection and a touchstone for colonial American government documents. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
