Love in the Big City

I wanted to read this book because the series was so great! I’d describe it as a slice of life or a collection of moments out of the life of a man who faces troubles in society, work, sickness and above all relationships. The author has a voice that feels so real without glossing over the hard edges of reality. I love the way he describes life: a perfect mix of mundanity and a sense of appreciating life – the beautiful moments and their dire ends. The story is really fast paced but also introspective – I think the series did a great job at filling in the visual details. But the dialogs and scenes and characters feel the same. What I really admire about this book is that it shows whatever chances you take in life – life goes on and you’ll grow over your mistakes, regrets and insecurities. The protagonist seems to take everything so nonchalantly – although I know he actually cares a lot, but life is complicated. He knows who he is and does as he pleases, not thinking too much about the meaning of his actions. The times he falls in and out of love are described beautifully – something that came over him, something he hadn’t expected, because he hadn’t any expectations on life to begin with : “To me, love is a thing you can’t stop when you’re caught up in it, a brief moment you can escape from only after it turns into the most hideous thing imaginable when you distance yourself from it.”
