A DISAPPEARANCE. A SMALL TOWN. A QUESTION THAT NEEDS ANSWERING...

Cal Hooper thought a fixer-upper in a remote Irish village would be the perfect escape. After twenty-five years in the Chicago police force, and a bruising divorce, he just wants to build a new life in a pretty spot with a good pub where nothing much happens.

But then a local kid comes looking for his help. His brother has gone missing, and no one, least of all the police, seems to care. Cal wants nothing to do with any kind of investigation, but somehow he can't make himself walk away.

Soon Cal will discover that even in the most idyllic small town, secrets lie hidden, people aren't always what they seem, and trouble can come calling at his door.

A gripping tale of breath-taking beauty and suspense that asks how we decide what's right and wrong in a world where neither is simple, and what we risk if we fail.

Secrets in small Irish village

Bewertung aus Wien am 17.02.2021

Bewertet: Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

Cal Hooper starts his new life in rural Ireland, after spending 20+ years on the Chicago PD. But obviously there is criminal activity in even the smallest village. Therefore, Cal is soon busy trying to find out what happened to a 19 year old boy half a year ago. And since he has no CSI team and no piece of evidence, he has to solve this puzzle solely with (unreliable) statements and his own wit. Tana French takes her time to tell her story, which makes it slow especially in the beginning. But the author wants to paint a complete picture, and this includes detailling minor characters or an evening in the pub. And it pays off - I could perfectly visualize all these people and their surroundings. I was just as curious as Trey and Cal what happened to Brendan, although I could not see for a long time how Cal would be able to solve this case - with the few information he got. But that made the last quarter of the book so much more exciting.

Tana French is by far my favorite author. I read all her novels and I wasn't disappointed by "The Searcher" at all. I loved the setting in a small Irish village and although I guessed which character was to be trusted halfway through the book, it was still a page-turner as there were so many questions to be answered in the end. I love Tana's style of writing so much. She knows how to tell tales of crime in a special way and she always manages that I feel and suffer with her characters so very much.
