one of the most gut-wrenching books i've ever read. a very important work, the hero's journey that Lolita's Dolores never got i wasn't ready for the emotional weight of it - it was like going through immersion therapy, but what can i say... the more a book destroys me, the more i love it absolutely worth reading, but beware

A Deep Dive into the Complexities of Abuse and Identity - A Novel That Stays With You

My Dark Vanessa is an incredibly powerful and emotionally stirring novel. The subject matter is tough — but unfortunately, also very real. What is presented here in fictional form reflects a societal issue that occurs far too often: vulnerable individuals, often very young women seeking attention and validation, fall into the hands of those who exploit these needs without scruple. The psychological dynamics that unfold are complex, confusing, and deeply unsettling — and that’s exactly what makes the book so intense. While reading, I found myself constantly torn, emotionally conflicted. It made me angry, affected, and deeply thoughtful. For the first time ever while reading a novel, I reached for a highlighter because so many passages stood out — either as key turning points in the plot or as significant insights into the protagonist’s emotional development. Toward the end, I was almost relieved to finish — not because the book was bad, but because it was so emotionally demanding and heavy on the heart. The final pages, however, touched me deeply and felt like a fitting conclusion. All in all, this is a strong, literary, and deeply affecting book that lingers long after the final page. It’s not an easy read — but one that is absolutely worth it.

Discomforting & Infuriating, Yet Cautiously Hopeful

Be warned: This book deals with a very heavy subject matter and definitely won't be for everyone. It is hard to stomach and definitely tugs at one's heartstrings. „[…] why is everyone so scared to admit how good that can feel? To be groomed is to be loved and handled like a precious, delicate thing.“ „My Dark Vanessa“ alternates between present and past as it tells the story of a horrific crime, as experienced by the abuse survivor. Vanessa has her first sexual encounter at 15 - with her teacher, 27 years her senior. While she is aware to some extent, even then, how wrong their relationship is, it isn't until she is confronted with it all again almost two decades later, when allegations arise against him, that she is forced to re-evaluate the past she has downplayed and romanticized ever since. I applaude Kate Elizabeth Russell for writing such a well-crafted and impactful novel. It is painfully honest, raw, discomforting, infuriating and yet somehow cautiously hopeful. For the reader, it is painfully obvious to see how Strane takes advantage of his student’s naivete, vulnerability and need for attention and manipulates and grooms her to his liking. At the same time, one can relate to the ways Vanessa tries to justify, cope with and even revel in the situation she finds herself in. It is very hard to witness how she is simultaneously aware of and blind to the seriousness of it all. Even more painful than her internal struggle, however, are the more explicit scenes in this book. The author really doesn’t leave much to the imagination. Furthermore, I think that Russell shows very truthfully how damaging an experience like Vanessa’s can be in the long run, as she is still struggling with the repercussions long after she’s become an adult. In my opinion, „My Dark Vanessa“ is a very important and well-crafted novel that first and foremost raises awareness and should be read by as many people as possible.

    Must Read

    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Get ready to get uncomfortable.

Jacob Strane was fourty-two years old when he first started teaching the fifteen year old child, Vanessa Wye. Vanessa was also fifteen years old when she was being groomed by said fourty-two year old man into believing that the sexual relationship she shared with him was really love, and consentual for that matter. We follow Vanessa's thirty-two year old current-self as she, in the era of the #MeToo movement, is faced with reminders of her past. We see her struggling to go through her day as multiple women come forward with accusations of abuse against Strane. Kate Elizabeth Russell writes beautifully, she confronts the readers with the harsh truth of society and urges them to never stop thinking and start acknowledging the problems of the world we live in right now. With my whole entire heart I can tell you that "My Dark Vanessa" is a book that comes once in a lifetime and you should get ready to get uncomfortable, want to throw up but still continue reading because even though this Vanessa Wye is fictional, it is based on the authors real experiences and there is a girl who went through the exact same thing and we as a society have to change so that this never happens ever again.
