Rezension

'A hard story to read and a harder one to put down ... a package of dynamite' Stephen King

'The book that scared Weinstein' Metro

'Compulsive. I burned through the first half in such a fever that I lost sleep, I missed meals ... a lightning rod' Washington Post

'A brilliant and stunning debut ... utterly truth-rattling, humane in its clarity and chilling in its resonance. An absolute must-read' Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

'A skilled, terrifying depiction of grooming ... we should all read it' Marian Keyes

'Once in a while, a book comes along that consumes your waking hours, unmoors you from your lived reality, grips the very core of you and doesn't let go. My Dark Vanessa is that book' Esquire

'Clever, unsettling ... this novel stands out for its elusiveness, its exceedingly complex, inventive, resourceful examination of harm and power' New Yorker

'The #MeToo novel that's as gripping as any thriller' Grazia

'Gripping and unsettling... a bracingly uncompromising book. It will doubtless be devoured with an ache of recognition by large numbers of women. But it really ought to be read by men' Economist

'Superb ... a book that asks what we have lost and gained in an era that has revolutionised the way we think about sex and power' Observer

'Addictively disturbing' Red Magazine

one of the most gut-wrenching books i've ever read. a very important work, the hero's journey that Lolita's Dolores never got i wasn't ready for the emotional weight of it - it was like going through immersion therapy, but what can i say... the more a book destroys me, the more i love it absolutely worth reading, but beware

A Deep Dive into the Complexities of Abuse and Identity - A Novel That Stays With You

Angelique aus Zürich am 08.04.2025

Bewertungsnummer: 2461151

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

My Dark Vanessa is an incredibly powerful and emotionally stirring novel. The subject matter is tough — but unfortunately, also very real. What is presented here in fictional form reflects a societal issue that occurs far too often: vulnerable individuals, often very young women seeking attention and validation, fall into the hands of those who exploit these needs without scruple. The psychological dynamics that unfold are complex, confusing, and deeply unsettling — and that’s exactly what makes the book so intense. While reading, I found myself constantly torn, emotionally conflicted. It made me angry, affected, and deeply thoughtful. For the first time ever while reading a novel, I reached for a highlighter because so many passages stood out — either as key turning points in the plot or as significant insights into the protagonist’s emotional development. Toward the end, I was almost relieved to finish — not because the book was bad, but because it was so emotionally demanding and heavy on the heart. The final pages, however, touched me deeply and felt like a fitting conclusion. All in all, this is a strong, literary, and deeply affecting book that lingers long after the final page. It’s not an easy read — but one that is absolutely worth it.

Get ready to get uncomfortable.

Bewertet: Buch (Taschenbuch)

Jacob Strane was fourty-two years old when he first started teaching the fifteen year old child, Vanessa Wye. Vanessa was also fifteen years old when she was being groomed by said fourty-two year old man into believing that the sexual relationship she shared with him was really love, and consentual for that matter. We follow Vanessa's thirty-two year old current-self as she, in the era of the #MeToo movement, is faced with reminders of her past. We see her struggling to go through her day as multiple women come forward with accusations of abuse against Strane. Kate Elizabeth Russell writes beautifully, she confronts the readers with the harsh truth of society and urges them to never stop thinking and start acknowledging the problems of the world we live in right now. With my whole entire heart I can tell you that "My Dark Vanessa" is a book that comes once in a lifetime and you should get ready to get uncomfortable, want to throw up but still continue reading because even though this Vanessa Wye is fictional, it is based on the authors real experiences and there is a girl who went through the exact same thing and we as a society have to change so that this never happens ever again.
