Good story - wrong year!
Call me oldfashioned, but in trying times like these (Covid-19), I'd like to read about people who solve their problems, who find solace and purpose and love. This book doesn't give me that. Which is a shame, becaue it's well written, the characters are psychologically sound, the world of the Victorian circus is marvellously described, without overlooking the horrors of the time. But the protagonists don't get the happy end they - and I - deserve, and that is not a story I want to read just now.
