Her experience as a children's writer shines through this thoughtful narrative in the form of lyrical, poignant language, a plot that accelerates towards its inevitable conclusion, and concise, empathetic insight into characters struggling against a hostile environment. On the coast of Norway, in the village of Vardo, a storm wipes out all the men. Left to their own devices, the women band together in a struggle for survival. Maren, who loses her father and brother in the storm, is threatened by grief like nothing before, but when a new commisioner on a mission to save the women of Vardo from witch craft arrives with his beautiful new wife, everything changes. This book is beautiful and harrowing, at times uncomfortable to read, but very worth the emotional investment. A wonderful novel - buy it, read it, and hold your loved ones close.
