    Buch (Taschenbuch)

    Utterly brilliant

Rachel meets her best-friend-to-be, James, while working at a bookstore in Cork. It's love at first sight: the two of them are utterly fascinated by each other, and very quickly their blossoming friendship starts a fire that they can't put out again; Rachel's young, attractive professor is releasing a new book, and somehow the two of them manage to set up a reading for him at the bookstore. But not Rachel will develop an affair with him that changes everyones lives, and all of this in Ireland amidst the recession. I really really really loved this book. It's written beautifully and I really liked how the characters were real, unlikeable and messy. It reminded me a lot of Sally Rooney, who is my favourite author. Still, we didn't only emphasise with the main characters, but with everyone involved in this deliciously messy story. Rachel especially was very relatable in her struggles as a young professional trying to make it in her industry whilst navigating life, which is never what you've planned. I usually do not enjoy stories told by the main character, but much older, it usually takes me out of the narrative, but for this, the two levels of narration worked beautifully. The themes and struggles of the characters were wonderfully unterlined by the setting and the time-relevant issues. I'm very excited to read more of Caroline O'Donoghue's Novels, this was an absolute treat! (Also, the audiobook is - thankfully - narrated by an Irish narrator, who is amazing at her job!)

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    True Friendship

This is a fabulous book about a friendship that never ceases to grow more and more intimate despite various setbacks and estrangements that occur time and again. Rachel and James are young and characterized by an attitude that can be described as “I do not take anything seriously”. Their answer to the requirements and worries of adult life is the opposite stance: Partying and pretending to be carefree. Therefore, I found both of them exhausting and annoying at times. However, this made their character development believable: From Immaturity and Adolescense to Maturity and taking on responsibility. A key aspect of becoming adult for both Rachel and James is the shift from explosive conflicts where the main goal is to be right at all costs to more fruitful discussions where finding a solution is paramount for them. This was executed brilliantly by Caroline O’Donoghue.

    Buch (Gebundene Ausgabe)

    Wholeheartedly Recommended

The Rachel Incident is a delightful book that seamlessly blends humor with brilliant storytelling. While the beginning may seem a tad slow, the narrative gradually evolves, captivating readers and rendering it impossible to put down. The plot is a rollercoaster of unexpected twists and turns, keeping you on the edge of your seat from start to finish. What truly sets this book apart is its spot-on and realistic dialogues. The characters, especially Rachel and James, come to life through their engaging conversations, making it easy for readers to become fully immersed in their lives. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend The Rachel Incident. Once you push through the initial slower moments, you'll discover a narrative that is not only funny and brilliantly written but also rich in unexpected surprises. It's a journey well worth taking for any avid reader.
