The Decagon House Murders The Japanese Cult Classic Mystery

Aus meiner persönlichen Perspektive auch rückblickend ein Meisterwerk, das mich in die Welt der Detektiv-Romane eingeführt hat. Ich zehre noch lange von der Geschichte. Die Figuren haben alle Synonyme von bekannten Kriminal-Autoren der Vergangenheit („Agatha“ Christie, John Dickson „Carr“, Edgar Allan „Poe“, S. S. „Van“ Dine usw.) - Dem Buch ist leicht zu folgen und es bleibt durchweg spannend. Darüber hinaus kann ich mich an den Namen gestandener Schriftsteller bedienen, welche den Autor diesen Buchs inspiriert haben. Wer nicht an den klassischen Schreibstil des „Golden Age“ des Detektiv-Genres gewöhnt ist, sollte hiermit beginnen.

They have even given themselves nick names after the great classic writers of crime novels: Ellery, Carr, Leroux, Poe, Van, Agatha and Orczy. When they are invited to the remote island of Tsunojima, they are thrilled. It has been the place of a quadruple murder the year before and thus promises an interesting week which they want to spend with writing and enjoying themselves. Yet, they did not count on somebody waiting there for them to settle an old bill which is to be paid with their lives. In the meantime, on the mainland, three people receive letters insinuating that something strange might be going on and that a presumably dead killer might still be around. “Even if the world were viewed as a chessboard, and every person on it a chess piece, there would still be a limit as to how far future moves could be predicted. The most meticulous plan, plotted to the last detail, could still go wrong sometime, somewhere, somehow.” Yukito Ayatsuji’s debut novel is clearly inspired by the novels of the Golden Age of crime using the classic setting. “The Decagon House Murders” was first published in Japan in 1987 but only now the English translation is available. The reader alternatingly follows the evens on the island, where one after the other student finds his/her death and on the mainland, where they do not know what exactly happens there but try to combine the murders of the year before with the current events and the mysterious letters they got. Even though both lines of enquiry provide numerous ideas of what could be happening, the reader remains in the dark until the very end, just to discover what can only be called the perfect murder. The novel is a homage to the classic crime novels and mystery readers who have always enjoyed Agatha Christie and the like will be totally enthralled. The plot, first of all, lives on the atmosphere of the island which is not very welcoming and cut off from the outside thus strongly reminding of “And Then There Were None”. The fact that it was the scene of a dreadful murder only months before adds to the its mysterious vibes. The murders seem to be carefully planned, no repetition in how they students find death and therefore leaving you pondering about one person could manage all this without being detected. A classic whodunnit I thoroughly enjoyed.

„The Decagon House Murders“ war für mich der Einstieg in die Welt der Honkaku‑ und Shin‑Honkaku‑Krimis. Der Anfang zieht sich ein wenig, aber sobald die Ereignisse auf der Insel ins Rollen kommen, war ich komplett gefesselt. Das Miträtseln macht richtig Spaß – man stellt Theorien auf, kombiniert Hinweise und merkt schnell, dass man doch nicht alles durchschaut. Schon am Anfang hat man zwar eine Vermutung, wer der Täter sein könnte, aber gerade das macht es spannend: Man liest weiter, um herauszufinden, ob man richtig liegt oder völlig danebenliegt. Genau dieses Mitdenken ist für mich der größte Reiz an solchen Rätselkrimis. Die Figuren auf der Insel bleiben bewusst vage, was mich anfangs irritiert hat, weil sie kaum mehr als Spitznamen und Studienfächer bekommen. Gleichzeitig passt das zum klassischen Whodunit, der stärker auf Logik als auf Charaktertiefe setzt. Mir hat hier der Manga als Ergänzung geholfen, weil ich dadurch klarere Bilder im Kopf hatte und die Figuren nicht nur als schemenhafte Silhouetten wahrgenommen habe. Besonders gut funktioniert der Wechsel zwischen Insel und Festland: Auf der Insel wird die Lage immer bedrohlicher, während die Ermittler auf dem Festland in Ruhe nachdenken können. Das baut eine stetige Spannung auf und erinnert natürlich an Vorbilder wie Agatha Christies „Und dann gabs keines mehr“, das Ayatsuji offensichtlich kennt, aber nicht einfach kopiert. Ein paar Dinge haben mich trotzdem gestört. Für einen Detektivklub verhalten sich die Studierenden erstaunlich wenig wie Menschen, die sich intensiv mit Krimis beschäftigen – niemand sorgt für eine Möglichkeit, das Festland zu erreichen, was fast schon unfreiwillig komisch wirkt. Auch die weiblichen Figuren bleiben blass und wirken oft so, als seien sie nur für Nebenrollen vorgesehen. Gerade bei einem Detektivklub hätte ich mir stärkere, aktivere Studentinnen gewünscht, die mehr tun als verschreckt sein und Kaffee kochen. Der Stil ist stellenweise trocken, was bei japanischen Übersetzungen häufiger vorkommt, aber das Rätsel trägt das Buch problemlos. Der Rückblick des Täters am Ende war für mich ein echtes Highlight und hat mich richtig gepackt. Das Finale bringt alles sauber zusammen und schließt die Geschichte rund ab. Trotz einiger Schwächen bleibt das Buch für mich ein clever gebauter, klassischer und gleichzeitig moderner Rätselkrimi, der mich tief in die Welt der Shin‑Honkaku‑Mysteries hineingezogen hat. Und er hat mich neugierig auf viele der erwähnten Autor:innen gemacht, von denen ich vorher kaum jemanden kannte. Ein spannender, logisch aufgebauter Krimi, der zum Mitdenken einlädt und klassische Elemente frisch interpretiert. Perfekt für alle, die Rätsel lieben und sich gern herausfordern lassen.
