Marie Mitchell wird eines Nachts von einem Mann in ihrem Haus angegriffen. Sie entkommt nur sehr knapp. Ihre Vergangenheit hat sie eingeholt. Da ist sie sich sicher. Marie arbeitet als Geheimagentin beim FBI. Sie ist sehr gut in ihrem Job. Sie ist auch die einzige schwarze Frau unter den weissen Männer des FBI. Ihr wird damals 1986 die Teilnahme an einem Geheimauftrag angeboten. Sie soll Thomas Sankara ausspionieren. Sankara ist der Präsident von Burkina Faso. Sie ahnt noch nicht, dass dieser Auftrag ihr Leben und die umstände radikal ändern wird. Sei es in der Liebe und das Wissen über das Land. Mit dem Auftrag gerät sie ins Fadenkreuz des Geheimdienstes. Vorliegend ist ein brillanter Geheimdienstroman sondergleichen. Beim Lesen staunt man über vieles. Die Seiten fliegen nur so an einem vorbei. Von mir eine super Empfehlung.

Die ehemalige FBI-Agentin Marie Mitschell wird in ihrer Wohnung angegriffen und töten dabei den Angreifer. Es scheint, als habe ihre Vergangenheit sie eingeholt. Um ihre beiden Söhne William und Tommy und auch sich selbst zu schützen, flieht sie mit ihren Kindern zu ihrer Mutter Agathe nach Martinique. Dort beginnt sie ihr Leben in Tagebuchform bzw. als Brief niederzuschreiben...
In ihrem Erstlingswerk „American Spy“ hat Lauren Wilkinson eine sehr außergewöhnliche Protagonistin erschaffen. Eine junge Frau, schwarz, Mutter zweier Kinder, die als Spionin gearbeitet hat. Marie, geboren als Monica Williams arbeitet ihre Vergangenheit auf, schildert ihre Probleme und die ihrer Familie und thematisiert die Rassen- und Klassenunterschiede in Amerika, was ja gerade sehr aktuell ist. Ihre lerne ihre Eltern Agathe und Bill und ihre Schwester Helene kennen. Alles sehr interessant, aber für mich ein wenig zu langatmig und zu ausschweifen.
Auch das dauernde springen innerhalb der verschiedenen Zeiten, den verschiedenen Orten und immer wieder neuen Menschen war mir etwas anstrengend. Wenn ich schon eine Lebensgeschichte lese, dann bitte chronologisch.
Leider hatte ich einen Spionagethriller erwartet. Ein bisserl Spionage – ja, ein Mord am Anfang, ja – aber das war´s dann auch schon fast mit Spionage und Thriller.
Leider haben der Klappentext und die Leseprobe nicht gehalten, was ich mir daraus versprochen hatte. Den Worten der Time auf der Rückseite des Buches stimme ich sogar zu: „So etwas haben sie noch nicht gelesen.“ Ja, leider nur im negativen Sinn.
Da ich mir dieser Geschichte so gar nicht klar gekommen bin, bekommt sie von mir gut gemeinte 3 von 5 Sternen.
