Before the Norman Conquest rewrote the kingdom, English literature was already vivid with song, sermon, and saga. Hear the first English voices. Stopford A. Brooke leads you into pre-Norman England with a critic's ear and a storyteller's pace, tracing how belief, law, warfare, and landscape shaped writing. Part English literature survey, part literary history textbook, it offers Old English poetry analysis alongside the rise of the Anglo-Saxon prose tradition. From the earliest fragments to the eve of 1066, it explains why these works matter, and how their themes echo through later English writing and identity to this day. Brooke sets Beowulf in its literary context without flattening its strangeness, and treats chronicles, saints' lives, and translations as living artefacts of the Anglo-Saxon period 450-1066. The result is medieval literature criticism grounded in early medieval Britain history, attentive to language, metre, and ideas. He follows the meeting of Latin learning and native tradition, the shift from oral poetry to written record, and the shaping force of faith and kingship. Whether you are revisiting a university literature course, seeking an exam study reference, or building an Old English literature companion, this classic study rewards both steady reading and quick consultation. Casual readers will find a clear path through unfamiliar names; classic-literature collectors will prize its lasting scholarly authority. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today -- a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike.
