Before Massachusetts was settled and secure, Groton stood on the edge of danger. A frontier town under siege. In Groton during the Indian wars, physician-historian Samuel A. Green traces groton massachusetts history through the harsh realities of 17th century massachusetts and beyond, when colonial frontier defense was tested by repeated native american conflicts. Written as a historical nonfiction chronicle and rooted in new england town history, it follows the community's struggle, recovery, and memory across the new england indian wars, from king philips war history to the later french indian war new england. Names, places, and timelines are handled with the steady care of a local history reference book, making it equally rewarding for armchair readers and for those pursuing genealogy and family history. Green writes with measured authority, balancing civic pride with clear-eyed reporting, so the past feels close without being romanticised. More than a narrative of battles, Green's work captures how a small settlement organised, rebuilt, and recorded its experience, offering a window into the making of New England itself. Its lasting value lies in its sober detail and its perspective from one town that repeatedly found itself at the margin of empire. A landmark of regional historiography, in full. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions. Restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint -- a collector's item and a cultural treasure, presented as a complete text edition for classic-history collectors and anyone seeking a vivid, grounded account of frontier Massachusetts.
