At the meeting point of war, whakapapa and the Gospel stands Te Waharoa, one of the most formidable rangatira of nineteenth-century Aotearoa. Violence and faith collide here. John Alexander Wilson's The Story of Te Waharoa is a major work of Maori history non fiction and a distinctive missionary era history book, tracing the life and influence of the Ngati Haua leader through a period of upheaval in classic New Zealand history. Drawing on missionary records and personal knowledge, Wilson follows the patterns of intertribal Maori warfare, diplomacy and kinship, while carefully observing the first sustained Maori and European contact during the missionary era. Alongside this vivid narrative, he offers closely observed sketches of ancient Maori life, revealing social structures, spiritual ideas, and everyday practices that shaped Maori culture and traditions before large-scale colonisation. First published in the late nineteenth century, this is both a personal testament and a foundational reference for New Zealand historians, invaluable for Maori studies students and anyone seeking to understand early colonial New Zealand and the roots of later New Zealand colonial conflicts. Its portrait of 19th century Maori society remains a key window into indigenous perspectives at a moment of profound change. Out of print for decades and now republished by Alpha Editions, this careful new issue is restored for today's and future generations. More than a reprint - a collector's item and a cultural treasure for readers of history, biography and Pacific studies alike.
