A young surgeon in the Continental Army kept a careful record of marches, winter camps and makeshift hospitals throughout the American Revolutionary War, 1775-1783. This revolutionary war journal, at once an american revolution memoir and a meticulous continental army diary, opens a rare window onto continental army daily life: hunger and humour, discipline and doubt, comradeship and fear. Every page breathes lived experience. As a revolutionary war battle eyewitness writing from the tents and trenches, James Thacher observes not only strategy and skirmishes, but also the fragile bodies and minds of the soldiers around him, capturing the harsh realities of military medicine in the revolutionary war with unsentimental clarity and quiet compassion. Long recognised as a classic american revolution primary source, Thacher's journal stands among the most vivid american revolution soldier diaries and continental army firsthand accounts of eighteenth century colonial America. It speaks equally to revolutionary war history students seeking authentic detail and to general readers drawn to intimate human stories behind great events. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today - a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For anyone building a library on the american revolutionary war 1775 1783, this enduring narrative offers insight, immediacy and the quiet authority of a man who was there.
