This book cover promises you: Love. Magic. Revolution. What you get: 30% Love. 30% Magic. 5% Revolution. 20% gambling. 15% hot air (balloons). The Plot: Paris 1789 (revolution is waiting around the corner), Camille Durbonne's parents have died from small pox, her older brother drinks and gambles and her younger sister is sick. She herself has learned some magic from her mum ("la magie ordinarie"), which can turn scraps of metal into coins, so they can survive. But the magic is fading & the coins transform back to metal scraps after some time. So she has to find another way to provide for her sister because the brother isn’t really around and also because he stole all the family savings and disappeared. She starts to use dark magic which was forbidden by her mother. With this magic she transforms herself into a Baronesse and sneaks into the palace in Versailles and starts gambling with the rich people. She uses magic to win the games (every now and then). So her sister and herself can afford a better lifestyle. Of course love and danger is happening as well and also a little (imo too little) bit of revolution. In the end it felt like a build up for the next part.
