Every one of them could tell of their misery, they may reveal some secrets too. One secret in particular could destroy the whole industry and Tad Archer wasn’t afraid to investigate until he went missing. Captain Harry Corsham finds it his duty to find out what happened to his friend, which is not an easy task. He puts himself at risk, some people don’t want him sniffing around. Although some of the historical facts are pure fiction, they did not harm the story. It fits perfectly into the construction, despite the gruesome topic of the Atlantic slave trade. What got me hooked from the start was the powerful character Captain Harry Corsham. Despite the risk, he never stopped pushing further, his relentless search to unearth the truth and putting himself in danger. In the end, the only thing we can hope for is that the verdict may be justified. Also to mention are the insights you get, into the law system in 1781 and how the trading was conducted around Deptford. I’m not a historian, but I found them flawless and interesting to follow along with the plot. This is now the second book from this author, and like in The Square of Seven, I was quickly engrossed in it. It’s a magnificent read, a crime with a historical background, I couldn’t ask for more.
