"The Way of All Flesh" is a medical/crime novel set in 19th century Edinburgh. Will Raven is just about to start his apprenticeship with the brilliant Dr Simpson when strange deaths start occurring in the Old Town. Sarah Fisher, Simpsons housemaid, is a woman who does not accept the restrictions that come with her gender and just as curious about those deaths as Raven is. Together, they try to figure out what or who is responsible for the women's premature demises. On their search for the truth they encounter shady and secretive people as well as ruthless moneylenders... This book is the first book of a medical/crime series as well as the first collaboration of Chris Brookmyre and his wife Dr Marisa Haetzman. I don't know much about the 1800s or medical history, so "The Way of All Flesh" was not only an entertaining but also an educating read for me. And I loved it. This novel is very atmospheric, the storyline intriguing and the two main characters just great. I love that Raven has a good heart but also keeps secrets and is far from flawless. I'd love to see how his character evolves in future installments. What I love most about Sarah is that she strives for more than is deemed proper for a woman of her time. She is a very intelligent, strong and inspirational character and it's great to also get to see things from her perspective. I recommend this book to everyone who loves historical crime novels. If you also have an interest in medicine, even better. I, for my part, can't wait to dive into "The Art of Dying" and find out how Raven and Sarah's story continues.
