This Darkness Mine

I don't even know where to start with this one. Making it to end was definitely a challenge for me. The biggest issue I have is with the main character. I don't think I've ever encountered a character quite as unlikeable as Sasha. She has absolutely no regard for anyone around her, including her parents and so-called friends, is extremely manipulative, downright rude and has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. To make matters worse, there is not a single character in this book who is even remotely likeable or relatable to even things out. Every single one is deeply damaged and some positively certifiable. I don't usually mind eccentric characters or ones with a lot of baggage or personal/health challanges to overcome, but this is just too much. I don't want to say too much about the story itself. That's partly because I feel it's best to go into it with an open mind and no expectations and partly because I don't know how to sum up everything that's going on. Once again, it's just too much. As soon as you accept one plotline the author goes into a whole different direction, which definitely keeps you on your toes and makes it impossible to anticipate anything that's going to happen, but not in a good way. Unexpected turns are usually something I quite enjoy, but in this case an already whimsical story gets weirder and weirder and occasionally rather graphic and gross. On top of that nothing of what happens makes any sense, in my opinion. Initially, I felt like "This Darkness Mine" had potential, but in the end it was a rather disappointing read for me. If you enjoy stories that are really out there, however, you might want to give it a try.

I'll give Mindy McGinnis that: her stories are hella original. Nobody writes stories like she does. Though, like in this case, it's not always positively meant. I have absolutely no idea what just happened here. This was so weird, unusual and unexpected. I kinda like it but it also made me feel uncomfortale. Sasha is nuts, I'll tell you that. This book kept me on my toes, most of the time anyway, in the middle the plot dragged quite a bit. This Darkness Mine completely blew my mind but also: what the hell is the point of this book?!
