A strong individuality is the answer to the question about the meaning and purpose of one's own life. In a democratic constitutional state it will be protected and fostered. Many people take this for granted - and this is exactly why it is endangered. Whoever is asking about the threats to individuality, its driving forces, possibilities and limits, its promises and temptations, will find Protestant roots and influences. The power of Protestantism is based not least on the passionate endeavor to live one's life - in the presence of God - in good relationships with others, even if this implies conflicts with the ecclesial order.
