Requiem für einen Traum kann man nicht lesen ohne in irgendeiner Form verstört zurückzubleiben. Harry und Tyrone wollen Heroin strecken, verkaufen und reich werden ohne sich von ihrer Sucht auffressen zu lassen. Harrys Mutter tut alles um für eine TV Sendung schlanker zu sein und Marion lässt sich erniedrigen und geht daran kaputt. Alle geraten sie immer tiefer in einen Abgrund aus Betrug, Abhängigkeit, körperlichem Zerfall und Realitätsverlust. Selby beschönigt nichts, lässt seine Figuren gebrochen zurück, die für einen Traum alles tun würden. Sprachlich direkt und thematisch hart. Auf deutsch wohl nur noch antiquarisch.
