How well do you know your husband?

Hey, what happened? I want to read on but there are no pages left. That is pretty sad because I was so wrapped up in the story and then it suddenly ends when I just thought that now it really starts, we’re one step away from meeting the villain. I was so glad to see that there is going to be a sequel to this story because the abrupt ending disappointed me quite a bit. The strong parts about this book clearly are the characters and the relationships, especially Amanda, her ex-boyfriend and cop Shane and Will, her husband. These three suck you into their little love triangle. The story is told from Amandas point of view so you get to know her the best. I really liked her quite a lot. She is not the out-going type, likes it far better to cuddle up at home with her laptop, design websites for companies and secretly lose herself in the shadier parts of the darknet. But somehow you still don’t get the feeling that she is overtly nerdy or something. Losing her dad in her early teens had quite an impact on her and her later relationships. She has to overcome the the notion of projecting the perfect image of her hero-daddy on Shane and later Will. Most of the development of her character is based on that and it is pretty well done. The mystery of Will’s disappearence and the strange call Amanda received before that actually happened are two puzzles that are slowly pieced together. In the beginning the pace of it is a bit too slow for my taste. But as the story continues it tightens more and more because the danger, Amanda has inadvertently put herself in by taking the search for her husband into her own hands, becomes more prominent. You can practically feel it through the pages and expect someone lurking behind every corner, ready to jump out on her. That’s pretty impressive to create this kind of atmosphere. The means Amanda uses to look for Will are very interesting. The darknet is a place I’ve only heard from in the media, mostly in the context of weapons being illegally sold and purchased. Amanda is using it to hack into cameras, something that seems pretty easy for her to do, which in itself is quite shocking but turns out to be very effective, too. And then there is Shane who is acting against a lot of rules he normally would obey to as a cop and just for her. It deeply touches Amanda and brings them closer again. I liked their light-hearted banter a lot, just as much as the moments when they reached touchy topics that revealed so much about their history together. Pretty intense, the whole situation, searching for your husband with your ex by your side. All in all one can say that I liked this story. Amanda, Shane and Will and the relationships they share are carved out very well. The investigation of Will’s sudden absence is presented in a novel way that I found quite interesting. If the end hadn’t been that abrupt and had I gotten into the story faster, then the book would have received the full 5 stars. Now it’s getting a still good 4.
