Die Geschichte beginnt mittendrin: Dominick Birdseys Bruder schlägt sich in einer öffentlichen Bibliothek die rechte Hand ab, um gegen den Irak-Krieg zu protestieren.
Entlang der darauffolgenden Einweisung in eine geschlossene psychiatrische Anstalt (nicht die erste für Dominicks Bruder) erlesen wir eine "typische" amerikanische Geschichte. Die Immigration der Großeltern von Italien in die Vereinigten Staaten, das Zusammenleben in unglücklicher Familie und last but not least das Leben mit einem psychisch kranken Familienangehörigen.
Lambs Sprache ist gewaltig, vielleicht gerade weil sie fast gewöhnlich ist, common. Nicht im schlechten Sinne, sondern authentisch.
Bitte nicht vom Umfang des Buches abschrecken lassen, jede einzelne Seite fand ich absolut unabkömmlich.
Wer "She's come undone" mochte, wird diesen Roman lieben. - Und wer Lambs Debüt über Dolores und ihre Nähe zu Walen noch nicht gelesen hat, dem sei auch diese Lektüre ans Herz gelegt.
