Stacey Lee's short novel about the dramatic coming of age of a young girl out of Frisco's Chinatown told before the backdropp of the catastrophic earthquake of 1906 lends itself nicely for use as a classroom reader. It deals with the problems of a multi-racial and multi-cultural melting pot as we witness it and live thorugh everywhere in Europe these days and mixes that deftly with issues of gender-stereotyping and superstition. Without pointing a finger and patronizing moralizing the author manages to transport a deeply humanist message: we all should be there for each other and help each other out - and in extraordinary circumstances we might even manage to actually do so.
