Es sind eher die Schattenseiten der Blumenkinderbewegung, die Boyle hier in gewohnt ironischer Weise schildert. Aber selbst wenn man eine gewisse Nostalgie für die 60er Jahre pflegt, kann man dieses Buch genießen. Der Autor ist in Hochform, wenn er die unter der Oberfläche gärenden Konflikte gekonnt eskalieren lässt. Der Kontrast der Flowerpoweridylle mit der harten Existenz in Alaska ist ein Hintergrund, vor dem sich die Handlung besonders gut abwickelt.
Der Roman ist vor allem in der Originalsprache zu empfehlen, da sich manche sprachliche Pointen nicht in voller Qualität übersetzen lassen.
