Heroine Complex

Sarah Kuhn's "Heroine Complex" is the first installment of a superhero/urban fantasy book series with a lot of heart. Evie Tanaka is kind of a mousy wallflower and therefore easily overlooked. She works as an assistant for Aveda Jupiter, a kick-ass demon-slaying San Franciscan superhero and simultaneously best friend since childhood. On top of that time-consuming job she also serves as a surrogate mother to her teenage sister. As you can see, her plate is already pretty full. But then Aveda has to take a break from saving the world and forces Evie to stand in for her... I really enjoyed reading this book. It has a fast-paced and interesting storyline, features diverse characters and offers a great mix of genres. I especially loved the story's protagonist who shows quite a lot of personal growth throughout the book and turns from a nondescript wallflower into woman who knows how to stand up for herself. It's kind of hard for me to assign "Heroine Complex" to just one genre. It's obviously about a superheroine, gives off an urban-fantasy-esque vibe and also includes light-hearted and fluffy elements of chick lit. It's just an amazing mix. I highly recommend this book and am curious to see how the story contiues.
