despite the style of writing being quite simple, it made me aware of how perspective can really alter your perception of the story and its characters a great exploration of the psyche of an unstable person, disturbing that it has inspired so many real life serial killers highly recommend if you like silence of the lambs, couldn't put it down

This book tells the story of Fred, a lonesome butterfly collector, and his obsession with a young art student named Miranda. After winning the lottery, Fred decides to make his dream come true. He buys a magnificent mansion on the country side and refurbishes the basement, where he decides to keep his most prized possession, Miranda. For me, this was a 5/5, highly recommend. Insightful, intelligent, a bit disturbing but nevertheless, sublime and charming What I particularly liked about the book, was Fowles' writing. Not only do the characters feel very real, but he makes the outdoors seem like such a magical, yet ominous place. Even though the plot itself is chilling enough, what truly unsettled me, was what Fowles was saying about modern culture and the rise of the middle class in London, UK. This novel raises the question, whether financial stability really does leads to more freedom and a fulfilling life and even allows you to act without morals.
