A classic novel set during the siege of Malta 1940-1942 from the bestselling author of The Cruel Sea
'One of the most memorable characters of post-war fiction' Daily Express
'I finished it full of admiration for a superior craftsman' Sunday Times
'Monsarrat at his best' New York Times
Father Salvatore was a simple, lumbering priest, a Kappillan serving the poor Valetta, when war came out of the blue skies to pound his island to dust.
Now, amid the catacombs discovered by a chance bomb, he cares for the flood of homeless, starving, frightened people seeking shelter from the death that falls unceasingly from the sky.
The Kappillan of Malta tells his story, and the story of Malta, against the backdrop of the six-day siege. Each day brings forth from the Kappillan a message of inspiration to keep the survivors going, as he tells the tales of the six legendary events of Malta's history.
