Bis auf das Ende ein Stück wirklich guter (High-) Fantasy. Noch weit von G. Martin entfernt aber echt solide. Butcher gelingt es (wie auch bei den "Dresden Files") eine lebendige Welt mit vielen spannenden Details auszubreiten, eine Fantasy-Welt in der Menschen in enger Symbiose mit Geisterwesen leben. Wie für Butcher üblich gibt es jede Menge Action (mindestens die Hälfe des Buches über geht eigentlich immer die Post ab: Duelle, Krieg, Belagerung, Flucht und Verfolgungsjagden, Hinterhalte, ... ). Das Ende ist leider ziemlich öde [Achtung Spoiler] - alle Helden sind eigentlich tot, aber haben dann doch wie durch ein Wunder überlegt, und zu guter Letzt kommt noch der große Imperator selbst vom Himmel gefallen (wortwörtlich!!) und dankt den Helden und erfüllt ihnen alle Wünsche. Geradezu peinlich. Der Rest hat mir aber gut gefallen.

I stopped reading about halfway though the book because the only thing infuriating about it is it's inability to keep me entertained. It has been obvious from about the start where the plot is headed but the way there is riddled with unimportant events that don't appear to help character development or create lasting suspense. Butcher describes each character's thoughts at length but fails at making them appear complex. Each is driven by some generic personal agenda but I can't find myself to care enough about them to continue reading. The same goes for the world. 700 pages in I still have no idea what the furies of Calderon really are or how they work other than that they appear to be some elemental-like creatures that give their crafters some magical abilities.
