Amos Oz is Israel's internationally most acclaimed writer. This is his autobiography, published late in his life (as an autobiography should be). It is wonderfully written, and begins with young Amos's first memories as a child of a poverty-stricken intellectual family in 1940s Jerusalem. He also tells the stories of his mother's and father's ancestors in Russia. It continues with his memories of childhood and teens, continually leading up to his mother's tragic death, and beyond to when he wrote his first publications. Very interesting insights into Israeli life and politics - especially for the international reader - are contained herein. Highly recommendable for readers of all ages.
