Bryan Stevenson beschreibt die Schicksale vieler Menschen, die im Justizsystem der USA ungerecht behandelt wurden - oftmals aufgrund ihres Hintergrundes (Hautfarbe, Zugehörigkeit zu einer Minderheit oder auch Armut). Dabei geht er auf die Arbeit seiner Equal Justice Initiative ein, die versucht diesen Menschen (darunter auch viele Teenager und junge Erwachsene) zu helfen, wenn andere die Hoffnung schon aufgegeben haben.
Die Geschichten der Freilassungen betroffener Menschen oder zumindest Aussetzung der Todesstrafe sind dabei beeindruckend. Zugleich sind die Vorgeschichten, wie diese Menschen dort gelandet sind, bedrückend, genau so wie die Schicksale der Menschen, denen die EJI leider nicht mehr helfen konnte.
Stevenson hat eine beeindruckende Initiative geschaffen und leistet faszinierende, aber auch harte Arbeit. Das Buch ist absolut zu empfehlen!
