Believed to have been written in the early 1590s, The Two Gentlemen of Verona is one of Shakespeare's earliest comedies, exploring friendship, betrayal, and romantic constancy. The play follows Valentine and Proteus, two young men whose loyalties are tested when love intrudes upon friendship. As disguises, misdirection, and shifting affections complicate matters, Shakespeare examines the tensions between desire and honor, youth and maturity. The narrative's interplay between courtship and deception anticipates themes that would later mature in his comedies.
