Hans-Joachim Freund studierte und promovierte 1978 an der Universität Köln. Nach einem Postdocaufenthalt an der University of Pennsylvania, habilitierte er sich 1983 an der Universität Köln. Er war Professor an den Universitäten Erlangen und Bochum und ist seit 1996 Dirketor am renommierten Fritz-Haber-Institut in Berlin. Zu seinen Forschungsinteressen gehören die Physik und Chemie fester Oberflächen, die Struktur und Dynamik oxidischer Oberflächen sowie Nanostrukturen und Cluster sowie Modellsysteme für die heterogene Katalyse. Seine Forschung wurde schon mehrfach ausgezeichnet, u.a. mit dem Leibniz-Preis, dem Research Award in Gold des Fonds der Chemischen Industrie, dem Somorjai Award der American Chemical Societey und viele mehr.
