A tale of murder, intrigue and betrayal in the medieval City of York
In 1358 the fledging college of Michaelhouse in Cambridge is in desperate need of extra funds, so when the Archbishop of York bequeaths them a parish in his diocese, it seems that their prayers are answered. However, there is another claim to the parish's ownership.
Matthew Bartholomew is among the small party that travels to York to press Michaelhouse's claim. He and his colleagues soon learn that several of the Archbishop's executors have died in unexplained circumstances and that the codicil naming the college as a beneficiary cannot be found.
As they search the Minster's chaotic library and a spring storm threatens the city with huge floods, they are forced to fend off the violent determination of those who believe the legacy should go elsewhere...
