Religion is a useful device when trying to control a minority or a city as a whole. Hugo explores the character of Quasimodo entangled in the schemes of his master and the gipsy Esmeralda while portraying Frollos insanity and obsession with her with such a chilling depth and complexity which makes this book well worth reading
