I know this is how the author invented the story, but this change came unexpectedly. Initially, I couldn’t comprehend why Elizabeth George implemented such drastic measures, maybe to energize the series and rekindle interest. The last two novels were different in style, understandably compassionate with a suffering Inspector Linley, trying to get a grip back into life. This book should reintroduce him back to Scotland Yard. Sooner or later, Linley has to realize that his expertise is very much needed, and being back on the force would also give him a purpose. Readers who know Linley and Barbara Havers from the previous novels will notice the slightly changed dynamic. It took me quite a while to get used to the story and Isabelle Ardery. The side story doesn’t look as if it would fit in any way. But with the conclusion, it gets more coherent and has no unanswered questions. I enjoyed Linley’s well-known way of solving a case, despite the changes. Together with Barbara Havers, he manages to really find a way back to his old self, one step at a time. They are an inextricable team, despite her disobedience which sometimes places her in danger.
