As he becomes more involved in the family's affairs, he uncovers a web of intrigue and betrayal that threatens to tear the clan apart. Along the way, he falls in love with the beautiful and headstrong Lady Jean Tinlie, who is engaged to another man.The novel is filled with vivid descriptions of life in 16th century Scotland, including the customs, traditions, and political tensions of the time.
