Earth takes center stage in this updated version of Virginia Lee Burton’s 1962 classic Life Story.
Told through five acts, Burton’s art and text tell the history of earth from beginning to present day. Detailed proscenium spreads frame each era as a theatrical performance, staging fiery prebiotic rocks, Carboniferous coal swamps, and retreating Ice Age glaciers before drawn curtains.
Audiences follow the emergence of ancient life from Paleozoic trilobites in shallow seas to the sudden rise of giant reptiles and early mammals. Readers will gain an in-depth understanding of the planet’s history and their leading roles in it today.
Outside the grand timeline of rock layers and fossils, the staging moves into a quiet New England orchard, where the passage of time narrows to the turning of the seasons.
The book has been updated with cutting-edge science, including up-to-the-minute information on fossil records and the geologic principles.
- Prehistoric Animals: Chronicles ancient cephalopods, sea scorpions, and Devonian lungfish that developed lungs to crawl between puddles before land vertebrates took hold.
- Earth Science: Introduces young learners to the formation of igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks alongside shifting continental climates.
- Evolution and Adaptation: Traces the transition of plant life from simple seaweeds and giant Carboniferous scale trees to hardy conifers and flowering flora.
- Natural World: Follows the endless cycle of time through changing New England seasons, concluding with a newborn lamb at dawn for readers ages 4 to 7.
