Don Carlos: A Tragedy is a play written by Friedrich Schiller in 1787 and published in 1821. The play is set in 16th century Spain and follows the story of Don Carlos, the son of King Philip II, who falls in love with his stepmother, Queen Elizabeth of Valois. The play explores themes of political power, personal desire, and the struggle between individual freedom and societal expectations.Don Carlos is a complex character who is torn between his love for Elizabeth and his loyalty to his father and country. Elizabeth, on the other hand, is caught between her duty as queen and her feelings for Don Carlos. The play also features other characters such as the Marquis of Posa, a friend of Don Carlos who tries to help him, and the Grand Inquisitor, a powerful figure who represents the oppressive nature of the Spanish monarchy.Schiller's play is known for its powerful language and emotional intensity. It explores the idea of individual freedom and the struggle against oppressive political systems. Don Carlos: A Tragedy has been adapted into various forms, including operas and films, and is considered one of Schiller's most important works. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
